In 1997 Canadian film company Cinar made the first of a series of fully animated Paddington cartoons for television. Although loosely based on the artwork from the picture books, the style was, by necessity, much smoother and less textured than that developed for the printed page. The introduction of eyebrows helped to give Paddington different facial expressions.
